Mosaic: Citizen-facing European TV and Video News Portal for Streaming, Search, and Translation
Pangeanic, in partnership with several European broadcasters, the Autònoma University of Barcelona (UAB), consulting company IDC, Infalia (Greece) and Fincons of Italy has won an EU-sponsored proposal under the name of "Mosaic".
The award is nearly €2 million and partners will use it to create a Citizen-facing European TV and Video News Portal for Streaming, Search, and AI Transcription and AI Translation of European TV and video news, audiovisual content and documentaries. The European media landscape faces various challenges, including the rise of new technologies, large volumes of data and content, and a complex regulatory environment.
Competition from non-EU streaming services, such as Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime, has resulted in traditional broadcasters vying for audience share. These streaming giants offer on-demand content with bigger budgets, making it difficult for European broadcasters to compete. The Mosaic project addresses these challenges by developing an AI-enhanced platform that will serve as a central hub for media content creators, distributors, and consumers. This platform will enable the creation and consumption of multimedia multilingual content at the European level, leveraging the abundance and richness of cultural heritage, media, and news repositories.
By integrating multimodal and multilingual search capabilities, advanced AI-driven content navigation, and AI-based machine translation for subtitling, audio description, and dubbing, Mosaic aims to create a platform that offers professional and non-professional users novel information experiences while maximizing the potential of the broadcasters’ rich archival content.
Mosaic's approach is designed to be data-driven, contributing to the acceleration of the EU Data Strategy and highlighting the importance of data-sharing. The project will gather and combine heterogeneous large data that span all stakeholders to build knowledge for citizens and media creators and distributors.
The Mosaic Platform
The platform will be co-created from ideation to deployment, following a bottom-up approach, and will be UX tested for accessibility to comply with WACAG2.1 and GDPR requirements. Co-ordinator Fincons, together with technical partners Pangeanic and Infalia, will produce a module-based platform to interconnect services.
Moreover, Mosaic will take into account immersive media technologies within the EU strategy on Web 4.0 and virtual worlds, ensuring an open, secure, trustworthy, fair, and inclusive digital environment for EU citizens, businesses, and public administrations. The project's AI-based solutions will facilitate multilingualism technologically, addressing the extreme imbalance in terms of technological support for European languages.
Mosaic's AI-enhanced multilingual platform aims to create a unified European media identity by addressing the challenges faced by European broadcasters and leveraging the richness of European cultural heritage.
By fostering multilingualism and ensuring an inclusive and accessible digital environment, Mosaic contributes to the EU's vision of a digital Europe that reflects the best of the continent's values.
