The PhD Summer School, now in its fourth edition, is organized by the Department of Translation and Interpreting of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. The
course by Manuel Herranz will start by summarizing the history of machine translation systems and research in post-editing; starting from worries about the future of the translator’s profession, which seems endangered by the increasing popularity of MT. Sessions will also offer a review of computer-assisted tools in order to show how technology has only helped translators with increasing demands in accuracy, text recycling and terminology management. The key moments in the history of machine translation will begin from initial applications in the 50’s, the ALPAC report, Chomsky’s theories, the late 90’s and the birth of CAT tools, the first practical theorems on the use of statistical corpora and bi-texts, finishing with the translator automation initiatives (
TAUS, EU FP7 programs, etc.) After this introduction on Machine Translation, the course will focus on practical aspects, that is, hands-on MT systems, customization and the latest trends in post-editing measurements, metrics and analytics. The aim of the course is to give attendees a broad understanding of machine translation systems, how they work and how they are configured, their application, how to customize and influence a statistical MT system. The tool overview for post-editing encompasses SDL Studio 2009, MemoQ, XTM, Systran,
PangeaMT and KantanMT among others. The course will take place from the 25th of June till the 28th of June at Edifici K Campus de la UAB 08193 – Bellaterra (Cerdanyola del Vallès) Barcelona Further information about PhD Summer School and seminars can be obtaining
