EU fears no French interpreters in 10 years

23/9/2009 | EP The European Commission has launched an awareness campaign about being a translator to encourage young Francophones with a good command of languages to choose a career with a future in the EU institutions. The EU executive initiative is motivated by the shortage of interpreters of French and the prospect of having halved the number of translators of that language in the next ten years, since most current interpreters will retire by then. The bulk of the French-speaking translators who work in the European insitu were recruited from the mid-seventies and mid-eighties, after the accession in 1973 of the United Kingdom, Ireland and Denmark, but the rate of substitution of these professionals is not parallel to the retirement system. 23/9/2009 | EP La Comisión Europea ha lanzado una campaña de sensibilización sobre el oficio de traductor para animar a los jóvenes francófonos con un buen dominio de los idiomas a elegir una carrera con futuro en las instituciones comunitarias. La iniciativa del Ejecutivo comunitario viene motivada por la escasez de intérpretes de francés y la perspectiva de ver reducido a la mitad el número de traductores de esta lengua en los próximos diez años, dado que la mayoría de los actuales se jubilarán entonces. El grueso de los traductores francófonos que trabajan en las insituciones europeas se contrataron entre mediados de los años setenta y mediados de los ochenta, tras la adhesión en 1973 del Reino Unido, Irlanda y Dinamarca, pero el ritmo de sustitución de estos profesionales no es paralelo al de las jubilaciones. Pangeanic a speaker at Localization World Berlin

Swiss terminology database TERMDAT now online & public

The Federal Chancellery of the Swiss Confederation has officially released the online public version of their terminology database TERMDAT. The Federal Chancellery provides services to the Swiss government and the Federal Administration, as well as to the general public. Online access to the Swiss Confederation’s terminology records was previously only available via the intranet to the federal administration and public sector institutions, and to other selected partners with certificate access. According to Franco Fomasi, Head of the Federal Chancellery’s Terminology Section, “The initiative will help expand the information offered by the federal language services and create new opportunities for collaboration with existing partners.
