5 tips to translate a website in many languages and embed it in your business strategy

by Manuel Herranz Large enterprises and even SME’s around the world are realizing how important it is to translate a webpage in many languages. 1. A free website translator isn’t simply enough. It may do the job fairly well if you just need to understand a website in another language, but that kind of automatic translation is not good enough when you are looking to attract customers. 2. Free website translations published as good content send the wrong message to your potential audience. Google can be quoted as the best example. The search giant is very aware that it is the search engine of choice used around the world and it needs to be available to everyone. Since there are still billions of people who can’t read English or understand it, Google provides the option of translating websites and search results into the language they are familiar with – but […]

Machine translation: Can it be used to translate travel industry content?

by Manuel Herranz There have been strong opinions for and against machine Translation over the last few years. Whilst the general public has become a keen user of free online services, professional translators have poured bitter criticisms against the technology. Understandably, because the language industry is a small industry compared with other sectors where automation took place years ago (automotive industry, printing, telecommunications, to name a few). The Internet and in general any industry based on electronic communications has added to the increase in demand for multilingual websites, which means more translation for eCommerce sites and website translations. There are many supporters of machine translation technology because of the many advantages and problems it has solved where a translator could not be at hand and human translation was not an option. See the video celebrating Google Translate’s 10 years. But it has also gained something of a bad press, particularly […]

How Medical Translation Services Are Changing the Healthcare Industry

The translation of medical documents can be needed in healthcare for a number of reasons. One of the main reasons for translating medical documents is having a foreign patient or client. It’s so important that medical documents are translated as accurately as possible, so that everybody involved is on the same page. If mistakes are made, you could put your patients in grave danger and yourself in a lot of trouble. You just can’t afford to make any guesses or mistakes when it comes to somebody’s health. Although you may have employees that speak second languages, asking them to translate medical documents will take up a lot of their time. This means they’ll either have to put it off or their day to day work will suffer. With medical translation services, you can get things done fast and accurately. Here’s more about how medical translation services are changing the healthcare […]

The benefits of translating a website into a different language

There are more than one billion live websites online. They are mostly monolingual, although translations are becoming increasingly important. There’s no denying the Web has become the ‘de facto’ tool to search for information (much to the relieve of trees) and, as all statistics point, for commerce, too. And there is no better way to make a website more enticing to a broader audience than making it multilingual. Companies such as Microsoft and Adobe have versions of their sites in several languages. It helps them to gain the competitive edge. Especially when targeting new foreign markets. By the way, did you know which is the website with the most translations in the world? Surprisingly none of the above, nor Wikipedia. But it is something you all wish to do. The economics of offering your website in different languages are unquestionable. But let’s try to be precise. The following six reasons […]

5 tips for a cultural adaptation of translations

Marketing departments work hard to produce high quality content, high quality translations, catalogues, websites and content in general to project a quality brand image – an image that engages target markets and boosts loyalty to the brand and, of course, sales. This is in fact related to what we know as Inbound Marketing.  However, it is no secret to any marketeer that website content, and content in general does not fit equally in some markets and some content becomes very popular in some some cultures and regions whereas other content that may seem very relevant to us does not seem to stir any feelings. The first marketing draft is usually born out of a home market and companies use it to other target markets. The thinking is very simple: “Let’s translate into Chinese and this content can reach 1,5bn Chinese speakers. It is a simple enough methodology Excellent! Here’s the […]

The importance of a well-written document for translation

by Garth Hedenskog and Manuel Herranz Let’s see if we can make your life easier by going through a few steps to improve your next translation experience!! If you are a newbie to the translation arena, we recommend to use a good translation agency with a proven track record who can provide references. There are thousands of translation companies around so you will be spoilt for choice. All will promise you the world but be careful, some agencies will forget all about you once the sale is made. What is the foundation of a good, professional translation? Undoubtedly, a good translation team and trained linguists of course. But even the best translators will have a bad time if the foundation is weak: a good source file. To say that a translation read better than the original source file has become a kind of joke in the translation industry. What we […]

Will there be CAT tools in 2020?

by Manuel Herranz The speed at which computers and computing have evolved over the last 30 years has brought massive changes to many professions –and change for translation companies has not been an exception. However, the speed at which automation has hit and awaken our industry has often been “slow”. I mean automation not just in the general sense of machine translation, but most kinds of automations, including project management.  Adoption and progress have been painful, if we measure how clients often measure us: per capita productivity or how fast can you turn your translations around. The revolution brought about by the surge and increasing acceptance of machine translation in the last 5 years can only find a comparison in the “revolution” brought about by CAT tools in the 90’s. So, the question soon arises: Will there be CAT tools in 2020? Is a higher level of automation going to […]

Are Quality Translation Services More Expensive than Creating Content?

by Manuel Herranz Content writing and quality translation services from translation companies are rapidly growing fields. In fact, they have gained sufficient importance to play elemental roles in product and service marketing and aiding business communication. However, translation buyers find it difficult to understand than translating content may cost the same as writing the content. Sometimes they don’t know how to best use a translation company. They assume “research” has been done in the original, so no further research is required when translating. Translation should be no more than transferring. Effective content creation and publishing is now a critical tool in online marketing. So are translation services. In fact quality content publishing is one of the major marketing tools adopted by many companies today. They carefully design and strategize their website and blog content to attract more readers who can prove to be their potential consumers. Quality translation services, on […]

3 types of machine translation

If you are a content manager and own a business, you know how much time writing takes. For instance, you can order one of your writers to write good content for your blog, for example a content-rich article of about 1,000 words. It soon adds to 10,000 words of valuable content that you need to transfer from one language to another. How fast can you expect the work to be done to get Spanish Translations, French Translations or German Translations of those 10,000 words? Well, it can take some days or weeks to get it done, depending on whether you use freelancers or a professional translation company. Anx this is where modern technology steps in. If you need to produce volumes of work in several languages within a limited time span and with a tight budget, machine translation is what you need. With this technology you will save on to […]

Reflections on Gala Istanbul 2014 – The perspective of a translation company language specialist

The GALA 2014 conference was being held in Istanbul, Turkey from 24rd till 26th of March, bringing together experts and key figures of the global translation and interpretation industry. Here’s our summary from the perspective of a translation company language specialist, A. Thömel. On Monday 24th of April, the conference “kicked off” with a presentation by Fikret Orman, president of Beşiktaş, a Turkish football club from Istanbul with a history spanning over more than 100 years. In his keynote address, Mr Orman shared some interesting insights into the management of his team and, in a side remark, made clear what type of player he is himself, mentioning his work schedule of 16h/7 days a week. As a welcomed gesture, he had brought with him one of the black and white striped shirts of the club for each of the over 300 GALA attendees. They didn’t hesitate to slip the shirts […]
